Kings Stanley chasing a treble top
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 29th August 2024, 11:00
Kings Stanley are one win away from a very impressive hat-trick.
If they defeat Upton St Leonards on Saturday they will be crowned Gloucestershire County League Division Six champions, making it the third year in a row that they have won a title.
In 2022 they won the Stroud and District Association’s Premier Division and 12 months later they finished top of Division Seven in the County League.
They go into the game at eighth-placed Upton St Leonards with a 13-point advantage over nearest rivals Langford, who are at home to sixth-placed Oldlands at the weekend.
Kings Stanley have already won promotion and it could be that they don’t need to win on Saturday to win the title although skipper Jamie Bish is keen to end the season in style.
“Yes we do, we want to finish with a win and win the league,” he told The Local Answer. “It’s been a good season, everyone has contributed.”
Australian overseas player Lachlan Gibson has been one of their standout players, scoring runs and taking wickets with Bish saying: “He’s a good player, he bowls quickly, we’re hoping he will come back next season.”
Gavin Dean and Billy Botha have both been regular wicket-takers while Bish and Gloucester rugby player Jack Clement are among the leading runscorers in the division.
The club have also had success in the Frocester Fayre Knockout Cup, reaching the final of the 20 overs competition where they were beaten by Stroud.
And their newly formed 2nd XI are still in the promotion hunt in Stroud and District Association Division Two.
They are third behind Painswick and Tetbury but have two games remaining while the top two have only one each to play.
