Jarren Bacher, grandson of Ali Bacher, takes five wickets on Painswick league debut
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 18th May 2023, 12:00
A player with a very famous surname made his competitive debut for Painswick Cricket Club on Saturday.
Jarren Bacher, the grandson of former South African captain and top administrator Ali Bacher, was centre stage as his new club played their first ever game in Premier Two Glos/Wilts of the West of England League.
The teenager, a student at Oxford Brookes University, opened the batting and hit four fours and a six in his 24 as Painswick were bowled out of 174, and then took five for 34 with his off-spin before Goatacre got home by four wickets.
“He was absolutely brilliant, he’s settled in really well,” said Painswick chairman and groundsman Ian Hogg. “Before Saturday he’d played a couple of friendlies for us, he’s come to us through first-team player Reece Morris.”
Ali Bacher, who is now 80, was the driving force behind South Africa’s re-entry into international cricket in the early 1990s. His nephew Adam Bacher also played Test cricket for South Africa in the 90s.
Painswick, meanwhile, won the Gloucestershire Division in impressive style last season and are certainly looking to make an impact at the higher level.
They travel to Hatherley and Reddings on Saturday with Hogg saying: “The players want to get into the top four this season, that’s their goal.”
The club have been strengthened by the arrival of Jonathan Connolly from Bedminster this season. He top-scored with 66 against Goatacre.
“He wanted to play with his two brothers, Matthew and Alastair,” said Hogg.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
