Hatherley Hurricanes, Dumbleton Dynamite, Tewkesbury Royals and Cheltenham Spartans chase Cheltenham Premier T20 glory
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 2nd July 2024, 10:00
The group stage has been completed and the remaining teams are moving into the business end of this year’s Cheltenham Premier T20.
Four sides are still in this season’s competition – Hatherley Hurricanes, Dumbleton Dynamite, Tewkesbury Royals and Cheltenham Spartans – and all four are in action tonight.
The top two teams in the seven-strong group stage – Hatherley and Dumbleton – meet at Hatherley (6pm) and the winners will book their place in the final in a couple of weeks’ time.
All will not be lost for the losers, however, because they will meet the winners of the tie between third-placed Tewkesbury and fourth-placed Cheltenham.
Tewkesbury and Cheltenham meet at Tewkesbury tonight (6pm) and the winners will play either Dumbleton or Hatherley on Tuesday 9th July for a place in the final.
The final will take place at the Victoria Ground, home of Cheltenham Cricket Club, on Tuesday 16th July, and competition organiser Sathya Prakash Timmaraju is hoping for a crowd of 500 on the big day.
Last season’s final between Hatherley and Dumbleton attracted a crowd of around 300 and Prakash told The Local Answer: “It should be a great evening.
“The final will start at 6pm but we want people to come to the ground at 5pm. We’ll have live music, it will be great entertainment.”
And the competition, which is in its second year, has certainly captured the imagination of the clubs’ players and supporters with its coloured clothing, coloured balls, music and cash prizes.
The competition winners will receive £800 in prize money and Prakash hopes that youngsters attending the final will be captivated by all the razzmatazz that accompanies T20 cricket.
Children aged under-14 will be allowed to watch the final for free – their parent or parents will have to pay – and Prakash added: “We want the youngsters to be mesmerised by what they see, we want them to get as much enjoyment out of cricket as we do.”
A reserve day of Tuesday 23rd July has been set aside for the final.
Last season’s final saw Hatherley, who have yet to lose in the competition, beat Dumbleton by 24 runs.
