“It’s just crackers, quite crazy.”

That was the reaction of Dumbleton chairman David Smith after his side scored a world record 417-2 in a Cheltenham Premier T20 game this week.

Opener Ewan Gegg smashed an unbeaten 206 from 55 balls – that’s a strike rate of 374.55! – an innings that included 23 sixes.

Hatherley Hurricanes used nine bowlers to try to stem the flow but Gegg, who also hit 13 fours, was in unstoppable form.

“He hits the ball very hard, it was a phenomenal innings,” continued Smith. “Dumbleton isn’t a huge ground but it’s not small.”

Gegg, who joined the club from Stroud at the start of the season, shared in a second-wicket partnership of 211 with Dan Holland, who thumped 122 from 37 balls.

Holland’s innings contained 16 sixes and four fours. He came in with the score on 112 after Tom Kelly had crunched 64 from 25 balls.

Dumbleton’s total was 188 too many for Hatherley who were dismissed with five balls remaining despite opener Harry Bloomfield making 109. His 48-ball innings included 12 sixes and six fours.

Fittingly, it was Gegg, normally a wicketkeeper, who took the final wicket with the only ball he bowled.

Dumbleton and Hatherley could meet again in this season’s competition because they have both have qualified for the play-offs.

Group winners Bourton Vale Vikings play second-placed Hatherley while third-placed Dumbleton Dynamos will take on Tewkesbury Royals in the first of the play-offs next week.

Those are games that tournament organiser Sathya Prakash is keenly anticipating.

“The Dumbleton game was a great advertisement for the Cheltenham Premier T20,” he said. “It’s a proper competition, they’ll definitely try to do it again.”
