Chipping Campden delighted to host Grey Ashes one-day international
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 23rd June 2023, 09:00
“It’s absolutely massive, it’s a huge accolade for the club, we’re very honoured.”
Those are the words of Chipping Campden Cricket Club captain Sam Nicholls as the club look forward to a very special day next month.
The day in question is Monday 24th July and the occasion is an over-60s Grey Ashes fixture, the fourth of five one-day internationals between England and Australia. The match starts at 1pm.
“We want as many people as possible to turn up,” said Nicholls. “It’s an international and entry is free, we’re really looking forward to it.”
Chipping Campden, who play in Division One of the Gloucestershire County League, are no strangers to holding big games because they held a couple last season.
“We hosted an England over-60s trial, that was a big success,” Nicholls said. “The standard of cricket is amazing, we were trying to recruit some of them for our club!”
And they did succeed in recruiting one person from that game.
“Keith Fuller, who scored that match, is now our 1st XI scorer,” explained Nicholls.
The club also played a game against the MCC in 2022 to mark the opening of their new pavilion, with former England captain Mike Gatting the special guest.
“That was a great day,” continued Nicholls. “The pavilion is awesome, we’ve had a dramatic upgrade in our facilities over the past 10 years.”
The other Grey Ashes one-day internationals will be played at Thame (12th July), Burton (16th July), Southport & Birkdale (19th July) and Littlehampton (30th July).Other Images
