Gloucestershire pace bowler Liam Norwell, who is on the comeback trail, is set to return to his old stomping ground when Cheltenham host Corsham in a West of England League Premier Two Glos/Wilts clash on Saturday (12.30pm).

The 26-year-old is recovering from a hamstring injury which has forced him onto the sidelines for much of the campaign.

Norwell hopes to be fit and firing well before the start of this year’s Cheltenham Cricket Festival, which starts on Monday 16th July, and he will certainly feel at home when he runs out at the Victoria Ground in three days’ time.

That’s because when he first joined Gloucestershire back in 2011 he used to turn out for Cheltenham when he wasn’t required by the county.

“He’s always had an affinity with the club,” said Cheltenham player/coach Luke Sellers. “He liked the players, he liked the members and he liked the club.”

Sellers will lead the side against Corsham in the absence of regular skipper Will Simmons, who is away, and will have an interesting decision to make when his side bowls.

That’s because he normally takes the new ball, which he shares with Liam Walker.

“I will be happy to give up the new ball to someone of Liam Norwell’s calibre,” Sellers laughed, before adding, “I think I’ll say to him, ‘What do you want to do?’ He deserves that but knowing Liam he’ll say he’s happy to fit round us.

“He’s a top class first class cricketer and after what he’s done over the past couple of seasons there are a lot of people in Gloucestershire who think he should have had chances higher up the England ladder.”

Any final decision on who opens the bowling will wait until Saturday but Sellers may have dropped a hint as to his thinking when he added: “It will be fantastic watching Liam Norwell and Liam Walker bowling in tandem for Cheltenham.”

Norwell, of course, has established himself as one of the leading bowlers in county cricket over the past few years and since making his debut in April 2011 has taken close to 250 wickets in first class cricket at under 27 apiece.

“He’s been doing it consistently for a number of years,” added Sellers. “He’ll give our dressing room a lift and he’ll strike fear into the opposition.

“It’s the next stage of his comeback and we’re happy to support him in any way we can.”

Cheltenham got back to winning ways last week after two disappointing defeats with an impressive win over previously unbeaten Thornbury.

“We won our first three games,” said Sellers. “Hopefully that win against Thornbury has got us back on track.”
