Gloucestershire county and district junior cricket winter squads announced
Author: Contributed, Posted: Friday, 3rd November 2017, 15:20
The Gloucestershire Cricket Board have named their county and district squads for their winter training programme.
The players – who range in age from under-10s to under-17s – have been selected to take part in 12 weekly, two-hour coaching sessions from January to March.
The squads were chosen following a rigorous trialling process that ran from late July to mid-September.
The eight boys’ county squads feature players from 44 different clubs – 37 from within Gloucestershire. Dumbleton Cricket Club lead the way with 14 of their players picked, followed by Winterbourne (13), Bristol YMCA (9) and Frocester (8).
The 2018 boys’ winter programme has undergone a couple of minor changes, with the under-14 and under-15 development squads reverting from two squads (one north, one south) to a single training group. As in previous years there will be full district programmes at under-11, 12 and 13 featuring Bristol, Stroud and South Gloucestershire, Cheltenham and Cotswolds, and Gloucester and the Forest of Dean.
Gloucestershire head of talent pathway Tim Hancock said: “Yet again the quality of cricketers attending trials is improving year on year and we have received wonderful feedback from our coaches. We look forward to helping them continue their development this winter.”
The team of coaches has been supplemented by Cheltenham’s Stuart Houghton, who has taken over as coach of the under-14 development side, and there have been several changes at district level.
The girls’ county squads – under-11, 13, 15 and 17 – have been picked from 29 clubs – 25 from within Gloucestershire. Eighteen of the players picked come from Frenchay CC, with Dumbleton (6) also well-represented.
GCB women and girls’ development officer Lisa Pagett said: “As the women and girls’ game grows in both profile and numbers, we are seeing more girls being nominated for trials each year. This really makes for some tough decisions, but just shows the growing depth of quality in the girls’ game.”
GCB community coach Gareth Dawson has taken over as coach of the girls’ under-17s in the main change to the coaching set-up.
