Your sport at school: Cricket

Your position: Opening batsmen.

How did you get involved? Through my local club Frampton-on-Severn but really started playing and enjoying cricket when I was at school. Training twice a week with one or two matches a week.

Best achievement/result and why: Top score of 167 not out for Dean Close XI in year 8. Although probably more memorable would be two 1st XI hundreds for Dean Close Senior School in 2011.

Your best coach at school and why: Former Gloucestershire batsman Rob Cunliffe – gave up so much time to net and train with the team. Relentlessly bowl or throw throwdowns at me in nets after school.

Other sports played at school: Rugby and hockey. Played football when I was younger.

Did you continue to play sport after school and if so for whom? I played cricket for Didsbury CC up in the Cheshire Division One last year, which we won. Also played for Frampton-on-Severn a few seasons ago. However, due to being in Nottingham at university, I haven’t played much cricket since school.

What is your involvement in sport today – watching or playing? I prefer to watch it in the comfort of an armchair. Although still plan to play cricket competitively and play football recreationally.

How do we get more of today’s youngsters involved in sport? Through giving youngsters as many options as possible to play different sports at primary school and through free to view TV showing more football and cricket to encourage an interest. It is important that competitive sport is played from a young age – I don’t agree with school policies of everyone gets a game. Teams should be set out to win every game as competitive sport puts youngsters in a great position going forward in life.
