Young Cheltenham Harriers athletes smash long-standing club records
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Wednesday, 14th May 2025, 09:00
Hugo Bucher enjoyed a day to remember at the Gloucestershire County Championships at Blackbridge.
The Cheltenham Harrier under-15 javelin thrower was in dominant form as he was crowned county champion with a huge throw of 62.12 metres.
“He won the event, set a new PB, smashed the previous club record of 57.84 that had stood since 1993, and maintained his position way out in first place in the UK age group rankings for the event,” said delighted Cheltenham Harriers chairman, Crispian Webb.
And Bucher wasn’t the only Harriers athlete to turn in a star performance because the club’s under-15 girls 4 x 100m relay team won their final by nearly three seconds.
The quartet of Bonnie Shirlaw, Verity Gaskin, Alicia Taylor and Naomi Lawal crossed the line in a blistering time of 51.1 seconds and Webb said: “The relays always bring an element of excitement to the end of the day and the competition.
”As well as becoming county champions they also broke the club record that had stood since 2004.
“Their time places them 11th in the UK rankings, putting them on course to qualify for the National Relay Championships in August, when the top 30 teams are invited to compete.”Other Images
