Cheltenham Harriers’ Caleb Green Cheltenham Harriers’ Caleb Green

Young Caleb Green has competed in his first decathlon and he came away with a medal.

The 15-year-old Cheltenham Harrier picked up an excellent bronze at the England Championships with an overall score of 6,091 points at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

He was competing in the under-17 age group – he’s a first year under-17 – and his mum Sarah was delighted.

“We’re really pleased, it was a really good performance,” she said.

Indeed it was because he set PBs in five of the disciplines – the 100 metres, shot, 100m hurdles, pole vault and javelin.

His 400 metres run was also particularly impressive – he completed in 51.52 seconds – and Sarah said: “It’s a new event for him, he’s really taken to it.

“It was his best result, he was the fastest of all the decathlon competitors, it’s probably his strength at the moment.”

Caleb, who is more than 6ft 1in, knows what is required to be a multi-eventer because last year he won an England vest in the combined event which consists of hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot and javelin.

The Cleeve School pupil lives in Wymans Brook, which is handy for the Prince of Wales Stadium, and his mum said: “He trains up to six nights a week.”

And while athletics is obviously his number one sport, it’s not his only one.

“He does cross-country, rugby, football, tennis and even plays a bit of cricket at school," said his mum.

It helps that both his mum and dad are sporty people.

Sarah, who has just turned 50, is a social runner and last year completed the Cheltenham Half Marathon in under two hours.

Dad, Wes, meanwhile, is an ex-Bishop’s Cleeve footballer and earlier in the summer played in the club’s showpiece game against Manchester United Legends.

Caleb’s scores at the England Championships were: 100m, 11.38 secs PB; long jump, 5.93m;  shot, 12.15m PB; high jump, 1.69m; 400m, 51.52 secs; 100m hurdles, 14.18 secs PB; discus, 33.43; pole vault, 3m PB; javelin, 41.41m PB; 1,500m, 4:34.62.
