Ian Newns takes over as the new chair of Stroud Athletic Club from Jim Adams
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Wednesday, 1st October 2025, 10:30
Ian Newns is the new chair of Stroud Athletic Club.
He has taken over from the long-serving Jim Adams, who stood down from the role at last night’s AGM.
“Ian was originally a junior at the club, he came up through the ranks,” said Adams. “He has a very keen interest in the junior section.”
Adams will continue to play a prominent role at the club because he will now serve as vice-chair in place of the retiring Dermot Mullen.
He will be a big support to Newns who said: “I'm absolutely delighted to take on the role, I'm very keen to continue the good work that Jim has been doing over the past eight years.”
Meanwhile, Lee Stopford and Emily Chandler are the new men’s and ladies’ captains, taking over from Joe Hill Pemberton and Kim Newcombe.
“Joe Hill Pemberton is going to be the club’s teams manager,” added Adams.
Both Stopford and Chandler are fine runners. Stopford has entered this month’s Stroud Half Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 26th October, a race he has won three times in the last four years.
He missed the Stroud Half last year to run the Frankfurt Marathon.
Stopford joined Stroud AC in his early 30s while Chandler came through the club’s juniors.
“She’s a very good runner,” said Adams.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
