Spring is here at last! I think most of our pets will be as happy as we are to feel the warmth of the sun again, and to be able to go for longer walks or potter in the garden.

Why not take a moment to observe your pet – do they look like they are able to move around as quickly or easily as they always used to? Do they keep sitting or lying down more often? Do they still want to play? Do they have trouble cocking their leg or jumping up to their favourite sleeping spots?

In any age of pet, but especially in our older friends, arthritis is very common. Often passed off as ‘just old age’, it is a very painful condition that many pets suffer in silence with.

There is a lot vets can do to help pets with arthritis

Thankfully, there is a lot we can do to help, even in the early stages. This can range from good quality supplements that are naturally anti-inflammatory, through to medications and referral for treatments like physiotherapy and hydrotherapy.

If you are concerned, please do talk to your vet and consider taking some video clips of your pet’s movement to show them.

Finally, don’t forget that as we are enjoying the treats that Easter time brings, chocolate or raisin/sultana-containing foods like hot cross buns or Easter biscuits can be very dangerous if eaten by dogs. Several spring flowers, such as daffodils and tulips, can also make cats very unwell if chewed.

Keep these things safely out of their reach, and if you have any concern at all that your pet may have eaten any of them, please call your vet urgently.
