A space for artistic appreciation

Tokonoma is an alcove found in traditional Japanese homes. Not used for storage or any other practical function, its purpose is a space to create a beautiful display.
No detail is too much effort in Japanese culture; they live life with intention and the Tokonoma is an expression of that. I was lucky enough to go to Japan a couple of years ago and I saw examples of it everywhere I went. The beautiful flower display below was created and left to greet us in one of the homes we stayed in.
Creating a beautiful focal point in a room
For me, Tokonoma perfectly expresses the beauty of taking the time to style corners in your home. An act simply of appreciation – it does not have any other purpose, nor does it need to. Placing items you have chosen carefully, with intention, creates a beautiful focal point in a room. Using seasonal flowers or fruit in a dish or on a plate, with a picture behind it, is all it takes.
The artist Marie Lenclos shared that, at the age of 87, her father sets up his Tokonoma as soon as he arrives at their holiday home in France; collecting fruit and flowers picked during a walk, something to look at as they pass by, creating a sense of harmony.
Add a little air of magic to your display
To create your own Tokonoma, mix up your materials and shapes, and add in something seasonal from nature; flowers, fruit or a plant. A table lamp will light your display so you notice it even more as you pass by. If your chosen spot doesn’t have a socket nearby, use a rechargeable lamp, as tiny as you like, or a candle. It’s the glow you’re looking for to add that little air of magic and highlight your lovely display.
You don’t have to stick to a designated alcove, either. Using a table or kitchen counter top will work just as well. It can be especially lovely when reflecting a new season; try bringing the bright colours of autumn squash and pumpkin into your home.
Bring more colour and pattern with fabric
I love to collect baskets, ceramics, wooden boards, jugs, vases and trays for just this purpose. A piece of lovely fabric or a tablecloth spread out will really show your display off to great effect, bringing more colour and pattern.
There is no right or wrong to creating your own Tokonoma; it’s all about trusting your instinct and going with whatever takes your eye. The Japanese believe that artistic appreciation enhances life and, I have to say, I agree.Other Images
