Sporting the new season’s styles doesn’t need to be difficult just because we are trying to lessen the impact of our fashion footprint on the planet.

The older I get – sadly an inescapable fact – the more I see trends recurring again and again. Whilst it’s true that a vintage garment may not look quite the same as its 21st century imitator, with a few tweaks to a pre-loved piece, it is still possible to look fashion-savvy.

This season the 1970s are back. A-line midi-skirts, polo necks, printed dresses, high-waisted trousers, hacking-jackets or blazers, and knee-high boots are all strong looks and – sigh of relief – the harder-to-wear hippy look doesn’t seem to feature!

Most of us will already have these items in our wardrobes but will have mixed and matched them with other pieces over various seasons. For a quick and easy transition from Spring/Summer, pop a lightweight polo-neck under your floral midi-dress and wear with tights and boots.

Remember, it’s not what we wear but how we wear it that makes us individual, so interpreting the look in your own way is preferable to slavishly following 2019’s predicted image.

Another item making a comeback from the 70s is the Mrs Thatcher style Pussy-Bow Blouse. If you don’t feel like investing in one, a simple buttoned through shirt looks good under a blazer, or why not just tie a toning scarf, in a loose bow, over a round necked top and you’ve created the pussy bow look yourself. Job done!

The 70s are also referenced in another new trend – ‘Anytime Sequins’ aka ‘Day to Night Disco’.

Most of us will already own a sequinned item which we’ve used as a go-to Christmas party piece. Well, no longer will these gems just be front and centre in the festive season – we will be donning them as daywear with midi-skirts, chunky sweaters, jeans and boots.

A few seasons ago I invested in a couple of sequinned scarves and always enjoy sporting them with a heavy winter coat. The sequins catch the winter sunlight beautifully on crisp, chilly mornings, adding glamour to a casual, daytime look.

Checked or tartan trousers really shout, ‘Winter Country Walk’ and they are also back on trend this year. Why not team some you already own with your 70s inspired tops and jackets? Or perhaps try the Dynasty/Dallas Wide-Shoulder look of a few years later. This is also making a comeback and I am delighted, as I picked up a statement cardigan-jacket in a vintage store recently, whose shoulders make a very strong impact!

To get the look without having to invest in a new garment, why not visit a haberdashery department – one of my favourite pastimes – and buy shoulder pads to sew into some of your favourite knitwear and jackets. Then you can always remove them again when the fashion has flown!

So, there we are – vintage style that’s spot on for 2019!
