Gather together your best pals and get out there – long live the great Gloucestershire pub!
Cheltenham
Dunkertons Park
This is a top spot for soaking up the sunshine surrounded by fire pits and pretty parasols.
The cider, as you’d expect, is superb and there’s a great mix of street food vendors to ensure everyone in your gang gets to enjoy their favourite flavours. We love Jai Ho Tandoori.
DEYA Brewery & Taproom
Away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre, this independent brewer brings the best urban vibes on the edge of town. You’ll find it tucked away in Lansdown Industrial Estate and it’s a cracking spot for alfresco drinks with an edge of cool.
Grab a bench and enjoy the freshest brews from the tap room, surrounded by summer blooms bursting from planters. There are often pop-up eateries for great food, too.
The Railway
Tucked away behind Waitrose, this pub garden offers a great sun trap and if you prefer the shade, its leafy courtyard lets you enjoy the sun’s warmth without the burn.
Take advantage of regular happy hours and foodie offers that make a visit even more worth it. The pub is a strong supporter of independent breweries and the vibe is incredibly relaxed.
The Plough Inn in Prestbury
A lovely friendly spot on the outskirts of Cheltenham with plenty of picnic benches and fruit trees for shade. The new light-filled barn, that sits opposite the established garden room, gives a warm space to enjoy if the weather turns.
It’s a great hangout for families, with a small play area to keep little ones entertained.
Cotswolds
The Village Pub in Barnsley
Tucked away from the rest of the world, this pretty little pub courtyard is a haven of peace and tranquillity.
The food is big on pub classics and brews feature local favourites from Stroud Brewery, Arkell’s Brewery, DEYA Brewing Company and Hawkstone lager, as well as Cotswolds Distillery Hedgerow gins.
The Crown at Wild Thyme & Honey
Just outside of Cirencester, this pretty pub has an idyllic outdoor space next to the babbling Ampney Brook.
If it cools off in the evening, there are stylish domes which you can retreat into to enjoy supper under cover with glorious views of the cosy courtyard surrounded by greenery.
The Fox at Oddington
As pub gardens go, this one is swanky. A little off the beaten track, there’s a great choice of brews and cocktails inspired by the countryside that you won’t find anywhere else.
On a glorious day you’re surrounded by the scent of lavender and the hum of bees. Truly a heavenly hideaway.
The Lion Inn in Winchcombe
The courtyard tucked away at the back of this stylish 15th century coaching inn comes into its own in the sunshine.
When the wisteria climbing the golden Cotswolds walls is in full bloom, it’s a mesmerising sight and in the evening strings of fairy lights give the garden a magical glow.
Gloucester
Gloucester Food Dock
It might not officially rank as a pub garden, but the benches outside of Hop Kettle Tap Room offer a cracking view of the Docks to enjoy a pint on a sunny afternoon.
The terrace areas outside of Roots + Seeds, Strip Steak Bar, Elote, Chuck and Bella Mia Pizza also give wonderful waterside views to soak up over a casual bite to eat.
Café René
This characterful courtyard is brightened up with hanging baskets that are bursting with blooms and there’s often jolly bunting adding to the sunshine celebration vibes.
Grab a picnic bench and choose from an extensive wine list and regularly-changing ales from local breweries.
Brewhouse & Kitchen at Gloucester Quays
With waterside views, this pub offers a great outdoor place to relax in the sunshine.
Local, craft beers are served alongside classic pub grub. It’s a peaceful part of the city and a chilled place to unwind. Pretty planters filled with flowers add a beautiful burst of colour.
The Fountain Inn
This traditional pub, packed with old school classic charm, is thought to have originated from one of the oldest brewing sites in the city.
Expect hearty pub classics, friendly staff and the chance to enjoy a beer in the cute courtyard festooned with fairy lights.
Stroud
The Black Horse Inn in Amberley
The glorious views of rolling hills and huge skies make this pub garden very hard to beat for invoking a sense of wild freedom.
There are tacos and hot dogs on the menu and if you’re a fan of whisky, this independent pub boasts one of the most extensive lists in Gloucestershire. Leave the car at home!
The Woolpack Inn in Slad
Writer and poet Laurie Lee’s favourite pub offers scenic Slad Valley views and a nostalgic sense of stepping back in time.
Highly regarded for its fantastic food, the menu draws on the best produce from local suppliers. The bar menu baguettes are outstanding! Its outdoor space on the terrace is relatively tight so it’s worth turning up early to grab a bench.
The Edgemoor Inn near Painswick
This welcoming pub prides itself on food with a view. The picturesque Painswick Valley sprawls out in front of you, making a drink or meal here a true treat.
Those who visit for the first time often call it a ‘hidden gem’ but locals in the know keep it busy, so book ahead to be sure of a table.
The Bear of Rodborough
This lovely pub garden is a joy on a sunny day. It has its own outdoor bar, so you don’t have to go inside to grab your pint. And when you’ve finished your food and drink you can admire the expansive views of Rodborough Common on your doorstep.
Enjoy garden games like table tennis or giant Connect 4 or simply soak up the fantastic sense of space surrounding the open oak veranda.
North Gloucestershire
The Royal Oak Gretton
You don’t get much more spectacular views than this prime alfresco spot near Winchcombe. And how many pubs have a tennis court to break up the food and drinks?
Savour the views of the Vale of Evesham and let the youngsters roam free in the play park. If you feel like leaving is too much of a wrench, there are a trio shepherd’s huts to extend your time to soak up those views!
The Mount Inn in Stanton
Sitting at the top of the stunning Cotswolds village of Stanton, near Broadway, this picture perfect pub is a glorious spot for alfresco drinks.
On a bright day you can see all the way across to the Malvern Hills, which is a truly magnificent view! And if you fancy a game of boules, there’s a full gravelled court in the grounds.
The Fleet Inn at Twyning
Sitting outside this popular pub, you’ll spot boats gliding by on the River Avon, framed by the distant views of Bredon Hill.
It’s a summer favourite for many, for good reason. The Butcombe menu offers plenty of choice of food and drinks and there’s a huge amount of space outside to really feel like you’re getting away from it all.
The Gloucester Old Spot
A slice of rural bliss, this pub garden between Cheltenham and Tewkesbury overlooks fields and has plenty of tables for a pint.
There are summer salads to enjoy as well as barbecued smoked meats. Wash them down with cask ales, Wye Valley brews or a guest cider with favourites from Dunkertons and Henry Weston, too.
Black Bear in Tewkesbury
This sizable pub garden is often the backdrop for live music, bringing a great atmosphere to your alfresco drinks.
With lovely views of the River Avon, it also has regularly changing pop-up foodie vendors for a variety of flavours. Independently owned, Ye Olde Black Bear oozes character and nostalgic charm.
