The weight of the world

All Areas > Environment > Save the Planet

Gone are the days when I would sit in an empty bathtub, imagining bubbles around me, silently panicking about the drinking water crisis. Yet, that anxiety still lingers, surfacing new fears about what the future holds.

Facing the stark realities of our changing environment is daunting; acknowledging them can open a floodgate of paralysing fear that requires both courage and action to overcome.

Many of us have noticed the rising food prices – a consequence of droughts and floods disrupting agriculture. Extreme weather conditions have led to significant increases in the prices of commodities like coffee, tea and chocolate.

A constant reminder of our challenges

The litter accumulating on our streets, especially persistent plastics, serves as a constant reminder of our environmental challenges. A recent study found microplastic contamination in 99% of seafood samples, underscoring the pervasive nature of plastic pollution.

It’s no wonder people feel anxious; these issues are real and visibly unfolding before us.

In the face of such overwhelming problems, it’s easy to feel insignificant. What can one individual do to address global crises? Who am I to make an impact? The truth is, you are more powerful than you realise. Your thoughts, when nurtured, can inspire actions that take root and effect change. Taking action is a crucial step in mitigating anxiety. Start small: choose one issue, break it down, and transform it into manageable actions.

If, like me, you’re concerned about water scarcity, consider these steps: reduce your shower time by a minute, sign a petition advocating for water conservation, educate yourself about water issues, or install a rain barrel to collect water.

Connect with others who share your concerns

Engaging in local initiatives, such as joining a river clean-up group, can connect you with others who share your concerns. Collective action amplifies our abilities, combining diverse skills and knowledge to achieve more than we could alone. Numerous local and international groups are emerging, filled with individuals who care deeply and are taking action.

Communication is vital. I’ve found that many people share these fears, even if their specific concerns differ. Sharing our anxieties provides emotional relief.

Intergenerational dialogue can be particularly beneficial. Young people are especially susceptible to climate anxiety; a global survey found that nearly 60% of young people are very or extremely worried about climate change.

Share your experiences and coping strategies

If you know a young person, listen to their concerns, validate their feelings, and encourage them to spend time in nature. Share your own experiences and coping strategies – it can help alleviate their anxiety.

And remember, the natural world we are striving to protect is the very thing that sustains us. Take time to plant flowers, amble through the hills, sit under the shade of a tree. Connecting with nature reinforces our commitment to preserving it and reminds us of the beauty we are fighting for. We’ve got this!
