As we look forward to summer, there are plenty of festivals, BBQs and weddings to attend in style. But have you ever considered the environmental impact of your fashion choices?
If you want to make a statement while also being environmentally conscious, look no further than organic clothing.
To find out what your clothes are made from, just take a look at the care label. It could be polyester, wool, acrylic or a mix of materials. Now, here’s a question for you – do you think your clothing could be contributing to climate chaos? The answer is most probably ‘yes’!
Fast fashion is bad for people and the planet
The fashion industry is a huge contributor to environmental pollution and climate change, with fast fashion being a big culprit. Polyester, for example, is a synthetic material made from petrochemicals, which requires a lot of energy to produce and emits harmful greenhouse gases during its production process.
And let’s not forget about the ethical labour practices. Fast fashion and conventional cotton farming are notorious for their reliance on forced and child labour in certain countries.
But don’t worry, there is a solution. Made from natural materials grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, organic clothing not only reduces the use of harmful chemicals in clothing production, but it also promotes sustainable farming practices.
What’s more, organic clothing production emphasises fair labour practices and the use of safe working conditions. By purchasing organic clothing, you’re supporting ethical practices and promoting social justice.
Now that you know the benefits of organic clothing and are committed to making conscious fashion choices, the next step is to find those eco-friendly treasures. Luckily for you, there are some amazing brands out there making stylish and sustainable clothing.
Opt for clothing certified by organisations like the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or the Organic Content Standard (OCS). Keep an eye out for People Tree, Greenfibres and Seasalt – three brands that are leading the way in ethical and eco-friendly fashion.
But the benefits don’t end there. Organic clothing is also better for your health. Conventional clothing is often treated with toxic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, to make it more resistant to wrinkles, stains and odours. These chemicals can be harmful to your skin and respiratory system, especially if you have allergies or sensitive skin. Organic clothing, on the other hand, is free from these harmful chemicals, making it a safer and healthier choice for you and your family.
And don’t forget, when shopping for your summer outfits, the most sustainable garment is the one you already own.
80% of clothing ends up in landfill
If you’re still not convinced, consider this: every year, over 80 billion items of clothing are produced worldwide, and 80% end up in landfills where they will take hundreds of years to decompose. Choosing organic clothing can help to reduce the amount of waste generated by the fashion industry.
So why not make the switch to organic clothing today? It’s better for the planet, better for the people who make it, and better for your health. Plus, you’ll look great doing it!Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
