A greener way to spring-clean

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably been counting down to March since Christmas, yearning for the promise of spring with its lighter evenings, gambolling lambs and hosts of cheery daffodils. Traditionally, it’s also the time for a big spring-clean after a winter spent indoors with the windows shut.

The products we use to clean with, and the items we choose to declutter, can all contribute to waste and pollution. By looking more closely at our spring-cleaning habits, this annual ritual of renewal can become an opportunity to make more environmentally responsible choices, as well as regenerating our living spaces.

Eco ways to declutter
If you no longer need an item, consider whether you can donate, recycle or repurpose it before throwing it away. If something is broken, could you repair it yourself or take it to a repair café? Before you start decluttering, make an exit plan. Do you have a charity shop nearby, or could you order a charity bag online? Alternatively, set up a Vinted or eBay account, or give items away for free via the Olio app.

Rethink cleaning
How many products do you need? Most surfaces can be cleaned with one multi-purpose cleaner. Only use the recommended amount of product to reduce waste and pollution, and cut down on single-use packaging by choosing refill pouches or visiting a refill shop.
Conventional cleaning products often contain damaging chemicals and are usually made up of 80 to 95% water, increasing carbon emissions through transportation. To get around this, look for concentrates, powders or refill tablets.

When purchasing greener products, look for the EU Ecolabel, Green Seal or Cradle to Cradle certification. Switch disposable wipes or paper towels for washable cloths, and open windows instead of using chemical air fresheners.

Make your own
Rather than buying bottles of chemicals, why not make your own cleaning products? Adding white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and lemons to your shopping list gives you the key ingredients to make your home sparkle, while reducing environmental damage.

A mix of white vinegar and water makes a great multi-purpose cleaner, while lemon juice cuts through grease and leaves a fresh scent. Bicarbonate of soda can be sprinkled in bins and on carpets to absorb odours, and works as a gentle abrasive for sinks and baths. Lemon juice or vinegar can remove limescale from taps, kettles and showerheads.

Be mindful
By decluttering mindfully and choosing eco-friendly or homemade products, you can create a cleaner, greener, calmer home. Every small change can make a meaningful difference, helping to reduce waste and supporting a more sustainable environment. In this way, the annual ritual of spring-cleaning can contribute to a healthier planet as well as a healthier home.
