The St John’s Players are set to return to the stage next month with their production of ‘Abigail’s Party’.

The play, first staged in 1977 and written by Mike Leigh, was also adapted for television in the same year, starring Alison Steadman in the lead role of Beverly.

“It’s a play I’ve wanted to direct and the Players have wanted to put on for a while,” said John Knowles, who will be directing the production.

“It’s an iconic play that has gone down in the annals of theatrical history.”

John has been with the Players for over thirty years, first performing with them in 1984 when they moved from the old village hall on Parton Road to their current home at St John’s Hall in Churchdown.

Before that, he was part of the Gloucester Operatic and Dramatic Society, which he joined when he was 11 years old.

Now 62, he estimates he has been involved in over 20 productions with the Players over the years, in either a directing or acting role.

On whether he prefers being on stage or taking a more backstage role, John said: “it’s a totally different buzz.

“Once we’ve reached opening night I just let the actors get on with it, there’s not much more I can do. Directing is rewarding in a different way.”

‘Abigail’s Party’ is set in 1970s Essex and tells the story of a group of neighbours getting together for drinks.

The play features a cast of five and takes place in Beverly’s middle-class home.

“It’s one of those plays that you can’t move or change,” said John.

“It’s a very humorous comedy but does feature a bit of a twist that I obviously don’t want to give away.”

When John spoke to The Local Answer, the Players had just had their first rehearsal.

“It was very good,” added John, “we got a lot more done than I thought we would!

“Our cast is very accomplished, and it’s set to be a good show.”

‘Abigail’s Party’ will be at St John’s Hall in Churchdown every night from Tuesday 12th to Saturday 16th November starting at 7.30pm.

The box office opens on Monday 7th October and can be reached on 01452 713952.
