Gloucestershire record stores set to battle it out on evening of live music

Any lover of vinyl should make their way to The Wilson next month.
That’s because local record stores and performers will be coming together to provide a night of live music using new and classic records.
The Record Store DJ Sound Clash is part of the #FirstThursdays initiative, which sees a different cultural event take place at the gallery on the first Thursday of every month.
The night will be hosted by local DJ Fade, who was part of a similar event this time last year.
He said: “Last year I joined forces with Olly (Tipper) and his Wilson Arts Collective to ,firstly, facilitate a 'WAX' vinyl DJ workshop and then a 'Charity Shop' DJ Sound Clash.
“This was where my team of young vinyl DJs 'Team Analogue' went head to head with DJ Lee Chaos' DJ Social Collective 'Team Digital'.
“At the time, this was their most successful #FirstThursdays event. It was a lot of fun for everyone involved, caught the attention of BBC Radio Glos and immediately created an interest for more of the same.
“The Wilson is an interestingly designed building full of creative people – so it's perfect for these kind of boundary pushing events.”
Fade, who is from Churchdown, has been DJing since the mid-nineties, and regularly holds vinyl DJing workshops with local authorities like the Glos Youth Service and even the BBC.
He says his love of vinyl is what drove him to set up the event.
“I started buying vinyl records in 1988 and never stopped playing them,” he continued.
“Therefore I’ve always been a big advocate for its survival! I play everything from 70s soul, funk and jazz to more recent hip hop and R&B – basically anything with soul!
“I approached Olly towards the end of last year about the potential of doing a 'Record Store DJ Sound Clash' – as I thought who better to go head to head than music experts who run record shops?
“I also thought this would be great to help boost the reputation of each shop involved – especially if it was held during the same month as Record Store Day (18th April) – plus potentially introduce a new audience to both too!”
The evening will see two of the most popular local independent record stores – Sound Records in Stroud and Cheltenham-based Badlands Record Shop – playing some of their best vinyl records.
“I put the idea to Sound Records, and they loved it!” said Fade.
“I also suggested to Olly that he put the same idea to Badlands – as he already had an established working relationship with them. Not to mention that Badlands has been the most established independent records shop in the whole of Cheltenham's history!
“Sound Records will have its two co-owners Sean and Tom both behind the turntables for this event – where they will select whatever records they feel will get the most crowd attention – with Badlands doing the same across the room.
“Each team will go tune-for-tune for an hour – with the audience deciding who comes out on top.”
The night will also see performances by Fade and also Gloucester rapper and MC Griz-O, who will also be hosting the sound clash itself.
The Record Store DJ Sound Clash will take place at The Wilson on Thursday 2nd April from 7pm to 10pm and will be free to enter.Other Images
