Alan Myatt is one of the most recognisable faces here in Gloucestershire. He is the official town crier for the City of Gloucester, earning a Guinness world record for being the loudest town crier in the world. He is a crier to commerce, industry and heritage, and can be seen at exhibitions, promotions and trade fairs across Europe. He is also a toastmaster, master of ceremonies and themed character actor.

The famous town crier has been instrumental in organising the annual Gloucester Day celebrations, which get underway on 1st September. Ahead of that momentous day, he chatted to us about his life in Gloucestershire.

What do you enjoy most about the role you play in Gloucestershire?

“I love being part of major and landmark occasions. I enjoy helping out at various community, corporate and civic events to commemorate, commiserate and celebrate.”

What’s the best part of your job?

“The look on people’s faces when I rock up for an event, as well as the hospitality and socialising after a major event. I do love a good jolly.”

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

“I love watching good quality period dramas and documentaries. I also enjoy visiting historic towns and cities in the UK and overseas. I love fine food and good beers. I’m very much like a hippo, on regular occasions I soak in the hot tub and enjoy the steam room at GL1 Leisure Centre.”

Where’s your favourite place to visit in Gloucestershire and why?

“Apart from the pub? Gloucester Cathedral would definitely be my favourite. I enjoy the architecture, I think it’s an awesome building that provides a fantastic back drop to memorable occasions and milestones in history. I occasionally light a candle and pop a prayer request in the box.”

What’s your favourite restaurant/eatery in Gloucestershire and why?

“Café René in the centre of Gloucester. They offer great beer, fantastic grub and good company. I'm quite happy when I'm on a night out to party until the early hours. It’s a great Gloucester watering hole.”

Do you support any local sports teams?

“I am partial to watching boxing and the rugby on occasions. I prefer to watch in front of a flat screen with a glass in my hand.”

What’s the one thing you miss about Gloucestershire when you’re away?

“I miss the familiarity.”

What is your favourite film and why?

“The Private Life of Henry VIII which stars Charles Laughton. It’s full of comedy, tragedy and unrequited love. I can see myself in Laughton, he was a fantastic actor.”  

Do you have a favourite book?

“The Bible. I read it every day.”

Do you have any pets?

“I’ve no time to lavish on pets unfortunately, I’m far too busy.”

Do you ever attend any shows at theatres here in Gloucestershire?

“I love musicals and comic opera. Not only have I visited the Everyman Theatre and The Playhouse in Cheltenham, also the Kings Theatre and the Olympus Theatre in Gloucester. I have performed in many shows over the years including 'Guys and Dolls', 'Oliver', 'Kiss Me Kate', 'Trial by Jury' and many more.”

You are heavily involved in the annual Gloucester Day celebrations – what can people expect if they’re attending this year’s event?

“Gloucester Day is a wonderful occasion, a time when everyone can come together and celebrate the great history of our city. The event is designed to install and promote pride in our historic city by creating interest in its rich heritage and colourful past. Gloucester Day has such a positive effect on the city, local businesses see a marked increase in trade, and town folk can enjoy what is always one of the best days in the calendar.

As well as the main parade, there will be charity stalls run by local community groups. It’s a wonderful opportunity for visitors to engage with the local community and support the various stall holders.”
