Here in Gloucestershire we are blessed with stunning scenery and some of the most magnificent historic buildings in the entire country. From the rolling fields of the Cotswolds, the majestic Gloucester Cathedral and the ancient trees in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire has one of the most diverse landscapes of any county in the UK. The county has become very popular with TV and Film producers in recent years, here’s a selection of famous productions that have been filmed here in Gloucestershire:

Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone (2001), The Chamber of Secrets (2002) and The Half Blood Prince (2009)

One of the highest grossing film franchises of all time, scenes from three ‘Harry Potter’ movies were filmed inside Gloucester Cathedral. The Cathedral cloisters were transformed into the corridors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, attracting Potter fans from all over the world to Gloucester.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The excitement that surrounded the 2015 release of ‘The Force Awakens’, the first ‘Star Wars’ film to be released in a decade, was massive. The film received positive reviews and made stars of new cast members Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. The film is set in a galaxy far, far away, but Gloucestershire residents will recognise one scene that was filmed in the Forest of Dean. Arguably one of the most important scenes in the film was captured at Puzzlewood, as Daisy Ridley’s character faces off against the dark side of the force.

Sherlock

English actor Benedict Cumberbatch has earned plenty of awards for his portrayal of the legendary Sherlock Holmes. The BBC series has been one of the most watched shows on TV in recent years, with the complicated plot lines and action scenes leaving audiences gripped. You might be surprised to hear that one of Cheltenham’s finest restaurants featured in the BBC series. In 2013, Cumberbatch was joined by his sidekick Dr Watson (Martin Freeman), as they filmed a scene in The Daffodil restaurant in Cheltenham.

Wolf Hall

Hillary Mantel’s epic story detailing the rise to power of Thomas Cromwell was adapted for TV by the BBC in 2015. Starring Oscar winning actor Mark Rylance, the show won a Golden Globe and four British Academy Awards. Part of the filming took place at Gloucester Cathedral during the summer of 2014.

Atonement

A poppy field scene shot at a farm in the Cotswolds features in ‘Atonement’, the 2007 war film that won several Oscars, including Best Film. The film tells the story of writer Briony Tallis who, as a 13-year-old, irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit. Whittington Lodge Farm in the village of Whittington, near Cheltenham, was used for the poppy field scene.

Die Another Day

The 2002 James Bond film was the last to feature Irish actor Pierce Brosnan. A quiet Cotswold village would be the unlikeliest setting for our favourite spy to visit so you may be surprised to discover that a car park in Bourton-on-the-Water was used to film one of the film’s major car chases.
