It’s easy to assume when going to see ‘Rocketman’ that it would be very similarly formatted to last year’s smash hit ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, but what director Dexter Fletcher brings to this Elton John biopic makes the film entirely different watching.

The film follows John (Taron Egerton) through a support group meeting, as he comes to terms with his addictions and recounts how he got to that stage.

Having become addicted to alcohol, hard drugs, and sex, it’s easy to see that it’s been quite a journey – something many people would already know from following Elton throughout his musical career.

In this film Taron Egerton again demonstrates his versatility as an actor, and he’s even got the singing voice to accompany it – his covers of John’s massive hits like ‘Bennie and the Jets’ and ‘I’m Still Standing’ could convince you it was Elton John singing them himself.

And if his performance of ‘Your Song’ doesn’t move an audience, there can’t be much that will.

The creatives behind this film create a hauntingly beautiful symphony throughout, comprising all of John’s greatest hits, managing to tip them on their heads at times and bringing new perspective to songs we once only danced or sang along to.

It’s somewhat strange to watch a biopic of an artist who’s still alive, but Lee Hall’s writing of John gives him as much life as he had at the height of his career.

Elton John has said himself that the film caused him to sob, something I doubt that’s uncommon with all audiences watching this film. The emotion is raw, unforgiving, and at times, painful to watch.

Skilfully supported by Jamie Bell and Richard Madden, Egerton shines in the role of Elton, and having seen him become so prominent in the film industry in recent years (including his standout performance in ‘Eddie the Eagle’), his success comes as no surprise.

Egerton’s performance in ‘Rocketman’ solidifies his place as one of the greatest modern British film stars.
