Disney history has told us the doomed fate of princess sequels; typically, straight-to-DVD or video flops that never match up to the success of their predecessor.
So ‘Frozen II’ is something of an anomaly in two senses – it gets a place at the forefront of Winter cinema, as well as being a massive success.
In the second Frozen instalment, Elsa (Idina Menzel), Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and Olaf (Josh Gad) journey to an enchanted forest in a quest to find the origin of Elsa’s icy powers, following a mysterious voice that calls out to her, threatening Arendelle’s future.
While it’s hard to beat the plot twist of Hans’ villainy of the first film, the sequel’s plot packs in enough of a punch to keep children and adults alike on their toes.
Directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee return along with the majority of the first film’s creative team, which is most likely what keeps the original flame (or snowflake, in this case) alive.
Of course, Robert Lopez, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Christophe Beck’s songs and score deserve special mention, serving as a harmonious compliment to the development of the characters.
Idina Menzel does Elsa justice once again with the unbelievably powerful ‘Into the Unknown’, which tops the Academy Award-winning ‘Let It Go’ and promises to haunt us all for the next few months.
An 80’s-inspired ballad, ‘Lost in the Woods’ performed by Jonathan Groff’s Kristoff surprises us, with a music video sequence reflecting the work of Queen, and showcasing Groff’s incredible talent, which was snubbed in the first film.
In short – Frozenmania has returned. Christmas has passed and it’s likely there will be a toy Olaf in nearly every home across the country.
‘Frozen II’ stands tall as one of Disney’s greatest sequel successes. Could it be that the franchise powers that be have mastered the sequel? And where’s the ‘Tangled’ sequel every fan is craving? If ‘Frozen II’ is anything to go by, great things are still to come.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
