The Twelve Days of Christmas is one of the most recognisable and well-known Christmas carols.
But if like most people you struggle to remember the lyrics after reaching ‘Five Gold Rings’, the Hucclecote Methodist Church may be able to help you out.
The classic song is this year’s theme for the church’s Christmas Tree Festival, which will be held from 6th-9th December.
Dawn Pearman is a member of the church and has been involved in organising the Christmas Tree Festival for the last four years.
She said: “We had a discussion and settled on the theme of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’. We’ve got a number of different church groups involved, including our Girls and Boys Brigade, Junior Church and Messy Church youth groups.
“Each organisation will have a different day from the song and will be decorating their tree with whatever gift is given on that day.”
The event is a friendly, community driven project that promotes creativity and gets people into the spirit of Christmas. However, there are some rules when it comes to decorating, as Dawn explains.
She continued: “Each tree must be at least three feet tall, has to feature lights, and can only have the same number of objects that is sung in the carol.
“So, for example, whoever has the first day can have as many pears as they like, but only one partridge in their tree!
“Every decoration is handmade, and we’ve got some really clever people who can create some wonderful designs.”
The festival will be open from 2-6pm at the church, and there will be refreshments available for visitors. Dawn is looking forward to the festival, which for her is one of the highlights of the year.
She said: “When the nights start to get dark around 4pm it’s a brilliant time to come in, with all the trees lit up the church looks really magical.
“The 12 trees we’ve got don’t quite fill the church, so I’ve also got my own family tree which, together with my grandchildren, we have decorated using every day of the song!
“It’s a lot of work but really worth it in the end, as it brings the community together into the church which makes for a lovely atmosphere.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
