Bishop's Cleeve Street Fair returns with host of activities on offer

The Bishop’s Cleeve Street Fair is widely regarded as one of the landmark annual events in the village.
Each year a whole host of stalls and activities come to the village to both entertain locals and visitors and raise funds towards local good causes.
Gavin Phillips, a Cleeve local and one of the team that handles the organisation of the fair, explains what will be on offer this month.
He said: “There will be the dog show and teddy bear parachute jump which are always popular.
“We’ve also got the return of the Bishop’s Cleeve Players who will be performing at the Tithe Barn with Cleeve Harmony.
“We’ve got an extended funfair with dodgems, a Ferris wheel and hopefully a space simulator which will be in keeping with the theme.”
Every year, the Street Fair committee choose a theme for the event – usually a tribute to a special landmark or anniversary.
This year’s theme is in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landings in 1969.
“We try to pick something appropriate,” continued Gavin, “last year was the centenary of the RAF.
“The theme doesn’t really change the programme. It’s something for stall holders to base games around, people to dress up, things like that.”
The Street Fair is free to enter and with the costs covered by the generous support of local businesses, the proceeds from the many games and stalls on offer go to local charities.
“I’d say we usually get around 3,000 people coming on the day,” said Gavin.
“In the past we’ve raised around £4,000 which we split between charities like North Cotswold Food Bank, the Air Ambulance, Cleeve Boxing Club and more.
“We also make a significant contribution to the village’s Christmas Lights celebrations.”
This year’s Street Fair takes place on Sunday 9th June, and Gavin believes it will again be a huge success.
He added: “It’s the prime village event, we’ve got activities for all ages, plenty of entertainment in the form of singers, dancers, folk and rock bands and more.
“Local businesses always use the fair as a way to advertise so it’s really a great way to benefit the whole village.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
