A brand new exhibition opens at The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum this month.

‘Colour-ways: Lights Works’ features three key light installations – ‘Our Spectral Vision’, ‘Tempo’ and ‘Shifting Luminosity’, which will be on display in the second floor gallery from Saturday 21st March to Sunday 7th June.

The exhibition has been created by Liz West, a British artist who graduated in fine art, sculpture and environmental art at Glasgow School of Art in 2007, and has been touring the country after first being displayed at The Civic gallery in Barnsley.

An integral part of the exhibition is the ‘Our Colour Wheel’ project, which is part of Liz’s ongoing research into how individuals each experience colour in their own way.

“It is an ongoing series of work which l will keep making throughout my life and career as an artist,” explained Liz. “I'd like to gather hundreds or even thousands of paintings over time.

“There is a definite collation between the participants and their painted wheels – the participants' interpretations of the wheel reflect their personalities, styles, agendas, and aesthetics.

“Physically demonstrating individuals’ perception of colour is the main reason that I wanted to make this body of works, as it taps into people's colour awareness and perception.”

Liz is inviting all art enthusiasts to get involved and create their own interpretation of a traditional colour wheel.

The submissions will be used by her to inform her research, illustrate how colour is perceived, interpreted and experienced by the viewer. A selection of the paintings will feature in the exhibition.

To take part, entries need to be on good quality, white paper and submitted to The Wilson. There are no restrictions or limitations on what can be produced, entrants are encouraged to produce a colour wheel that illustrates how they perceive colour.
