Dominic Osman has been a Cheltenham local for most of his life.

A former pupil of Pate’s Grammar School, he moved to London when he was 18 before returning to Cheltenham to set up his own hairdressing business in the town centre.

But it’s not just cutting hair that Dom has a talent for – he’s also a very gifted painter.

“I’ve always loved drawing and painting ever since I was a kid,” he said.

“I did a ‘Lion King’ painting on my child’s wall and a few of my clients in London wanted me to do it for their kids’ rooms.”

Dom specialises in acrylic painting, with his portraits of famous faces from the world of sport, music, film and more gaining a lot of attention on social media.

He continued: “A friend of mine posted a painting I did of David Bowie on Facebook and it got lots of good feedback.

“It grew organically from there and spread through word of mouth, and I had people getting in touch asking if I did commissions.”

Dom now has Facebook and Instagram pages dedicated to sharing his art, and has people from all over the country getting in touch to request paintings.

“I’ve had loads of commissions,” he said. “People ask for all sorts – pets, family members.

“I’m doing one at the moment of a motorcyclist, it can really be anything.

“I try to do as much of my own stuff in between commissions as I can. I enjoy doing pictures of famous people that aren’t obvious.”

A quick scroll down the DomArt Facebook page shows some of his recent pieces, of people like Bob Marley, Mick Jagger and Steve McQueen.

But one famous face stands out, mainly because in the picture in question the celebrity is stood next to Dom and his portrait of him.

“I do the hair of the co-owner of John Gordons bar,” explained Dom, “and I was talking about maybe doing some paintings to show in the bar.

“They said, ‘why don’t you do some for the Jazz Festival?’. So I did a whole load, including one of Gregory Porter which they put in the window of the bar.”

The Grammy-award winning singer is no stranger to Cheltenham and the Jazz Festival, where this year he was Artistic Curator.

He spotted Dom’s painting and went into the bar for a closer look.

“One of the girls who works there messaged me and said he was there,” continued Dom. “So obviously I shot over there as quickly as I could and introduced myself.

“He’s a lovely guy, I asked him if he could sign it, and his first response was, ‘I don’t want to mess it up!’. But he did in the end and we chatted for a while, that was an amazing experience.”
