Cheltenham’s water polo youngsters are celebrating after a fantastic performance at the Swim England National Age Group Championships.

Cheered on by their supporters at GL1, their four teams won a gold, two silvers and a bronze.

To have all four teams qualify for the finals is something to celebrate but for each team to medal is something special.

“It’s the first time we have medalled in all four age groups,” said coach James Ross. “It was the best club performance by a long way.”

Leading the charge were Cheltenham’s under-19 girls, who won gold with a thumping 23-5 win in the final over Sheffield.

And it really was a team effort with Amelie Perkins, who scored seven goals, one of nine Cheltenham scorers.

The two boys’ teams both won silver, while the under-17 girls picked up bronze medals.

And Cheltenham’s players also cleaned up on the individual awards.

“Sophie Leveridge was the under-19 goalkeeper of the tournament,” added Ross, who is also chairman of Cheltenham Swimming and Water Polo Club.

“Will Bamborough was the under-17 boys’ top goalscorer, Amelie Perkins was under-19 top goalscorer and Jess Day was under-17 top goalscorer.”

And that wasn’t all because Lily Ross was the under-19 girls’ MVP and Rex Lewis was the under-19 boys’ MVP.
