It’s just a month since this year’s annual squash doubles tournament at East Glos was done and dusted but already thoughts are turning to next year.

“Yes, we’ll be holding it again at the beginning of June,” said organiser Tom Ford, who resurrected the event five years ago.

And the tournament is getting bigger and better each year with the 2018 event involving former world number nine Laurens Anjema, from Holland.

“He added a real special feeling to the tournament,” said Ford. “He was fantastic on the court and off it. He really got involved with the tournament.

“He had a hit with the juniors and had time for the members as well.”

Anjema teamed up in the tournament with Nathan Lake, a current world top 50 player, and it was no great surprise when the number one seeds justified their ranking by taking the trophy.

They beat the number two seeds Tom Ford and Mark Broekman in straight sets after they had defeated Olli Rawlins and Nick Mulvey 2-1 in the semi-final.

In the other semi-final, Anjema and Lake defeated Rich King and John Welton.

The Plate final was won by Haley Mendez and Lucy Beecroft after they overcame Joe McGrath and Jamie Carmichael.

“They are a good pairing and they are really determined to come back next year and do better in the main event,” said Ford, who was also impressed by the Plate runners-up.

“They are still juniors and were playing together for the first time,” he added. “They did really well because they won both their quarter-final and their semi-final in the third set 11-10.”
