It’s all systems go for Tewkesbury Running Club’s Guy Fawkes 5 mile race
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 9th September 2019, 11:30
The ever-popular Guy Fawkes 5 mile race, organised by Tewkesbury Running Club, has sold out with all the entry places being taken last month.
This year’s race will take place on Sunday 3rd November and new race director Jon Mansfield said: “The Guy Fawkes race has long been regarded as the premier five-mile race in the South West if not beyond.
“On the 25th anniversary, we had Olympic rowing gold and silver medallist Zac Purchase attend the prizegiving as well as starting the race.
“It's known as a fast course and the men's record is held by New Zealand's number one runner Paul Martelletti, who is also famous for breaking the world record for running a marathon dressed as a superhero – Spiderman – in two hours, 29 minutes.
“The women's record is held by Great Britain team member Wendy Nichols.”
Based from Tewkesbury School, the course heads south through Walton Cardiff, looping towards Fiddington before returning along Walton Cardiff Lane.
This year’s event has a new sponsor – RED – and Mansfield added: “Having a local dynamic business supporting us is fantastic news.”
Close on 400 runners took part in last year’s race which raised £400 for the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA).
This year the organisers’ chosen charity is Friends of Alderman Knight School and Mansfield added: “Although we are a relatively small club with 100 members, helping good causes is always close to our hearts as we are a non-profit club.”
