Rob Forbes is so brave as he finishes in top five in Cape Town’s 100-kilometre Ultra Trail
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 4th December 2018, 14:30
Rob Forbes had to run through the pain barrier – and plus some – to complete Cape Town’s gruelling 100-kilometre Ultra Trail.
The Cirencester Athletics and Triathlon Club competitor finished a superb fifth in the classic race which is part of the Ultra Trail World Tour.
The race included 4,300 metres of ascent split between two major climbs and a near precipitous drop in the first half and endless undulations in the second.
Despite the 4am start – with sunrise halfway up Table Mountain – the heat soon became a major factor and Forbes was one of many battling dehydration and cramping.
Two of the race favourites were forced to drop out but Forbes battled on, covering the rough technical stages powered by a winning combination of pure determination and family support as he finished in 11 hours, 30 minutes, 53 seconds.
The race was won by Janosch Kowalczyk, from Germany, in 10 hours, 22 minutes.
The event afforded competitors the opportunity to enjoy wonderful views of Cape Town and the Atlantic Ocean, or even briefly running through winelands, but it is unlikely that too many were able to take it in, such was the arduous nature of the race in South Africa which saw 125 finish.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
