The Cheltenham Half Marathon is a great race and it’s special to win it, says Ben Price

Ben Price said the Cheltenham Half Marathon went “exactly according to plan” as he stormed to his second victory in as many years at Cheltenham Racecourse.
Two days after the 2018 race, Price still had a smile as wide as the finishing straight at the famous National Hunt course as he reflected on another marvellous run.
“Two-and-a-half miles out I saw my family and friends and from that moment I made a really concerted effort,” he said. “It was as I entered the racecourse and I pulled away in the last two miles. It all went exactly according to plan.”
Price finished in a time of one hour, nine minutes, 50 seconds, some 26 seconds ahead of his nearest rival and 43 seconds faster than his winning time last year.
The 37-year-old Cheltenham Harrier said: “Yes, this was really special. Having won it last year I knew what it felt like to win it, I knew what a great race it was to win.
“In the last couple of miles I knew I had it and it was amazing to be able to soak it all up.”
And the bad news for his competitors is that Price is planning to run again next year in the hope of completing a hat-trick.
“I’ve got to, haven’t I?” he laughed. “I’m getting better at the distance and I think I can go faster. I’m getting quicker in my old age!”
And for all his exertions on Sunday, Price was still back at work at 8am on Monday morning.
He teaches geography at Dean Close School, where he is also a day housemaster, and said: “I’ve had a great response from everyone at the school. Mind you, my lessons on Monday were all about the geography of the half marathon!”
