Smiths, Coney Hill and Hucclecote in buoyant mood as they prepare for RFU Community Cup finals day at Twickenham

Smiths, Coney Hill and Hucclecote will all be heading to Twickenham later this month on what will be a very special day for Gloucestershire rugby.
All three teams enjoyed outstanding wins in the RFU Community Cup on Saturday and all three will play at the home of English rugby on Saturday 23rd May.
Smiths booked their place in the Counties 2 Championship final with a 53-12 win over Mansfield at the Prince of Wales Stadium and will now face St Mary’s Old Boys, 54-25 winners at home to Trojans, in 12 days’ time (1pm).
Both teams play in Counties 2 Gloucestershire – St Mary’s won both games - but Smiths have recent experience of playing at Twickenham after finishing runners-up to Old Elthamians a year ago.
Coney Hill and Hucclecote will go head-to-head in the Counties 3 Championship final (11am) after home wins over Boston and Wells respectively.
Coney Hill won 24-15 while Hucclecote, the Counties 3 Gloucestershire North champions, eased to a 52-0 victory.
Smiths’ win followed their 54-36 quarter-final success at home to Cantabrigian seven days earlier and head coach Ben Parker said: “I thought we were fantastic on Saturday, we started with an intensity and aggression that we haven’t brought very often this season.
“I think Mansfield were a bit shell-shocked, they couldn’t handle our pace of play and physicality.
“We dominated from the start and scored tries from across the pitch. They sent their big boys running at us and we stopped them in their tracks.”
Matt Dean, Jasper Frost, Dan Jarvis, Will Matthews (2), Luke Cador and Mitch Renton were Smiths' try-scorers with Marcus Raymond kicking 18 points.
It was much tighter at Coney Hill where the visitors pulled it back to 15-15 in the second half before Ryan Barnett, who went on as a replacement 10 minutes after half-time, slotted three penalties to calm the nerves.
“Sheer bloody-mindedness, bravery and physicality got us through,” said 42-year-old Barnett, who is the club’s rugby manager. “We were 15-10 ahead at half-time but they got it back to 15-15 with about 20 minutes to go and we were hanging on for dear life.
“But we were very dogged, showed lots of heart and managed to pull through. It could have got away from us, Boston were a good side.”
Skipper Joe Twomey and Joe Porter scored first-half tries for Coney Hill – William Pinnell slotted a penalty and a conversion – and Barnett continued: “It was probably one of the best days at the club for many a year. We had a big crowd and the atmosphere was incredible, it was an incredible day for the club.”
And it was the same at Hucclecote, who, like Coney Hill, are preparing to play at Twickenham for the first time in their history.
“It’s absolutely fantastic,” said club president Jo Harris. “The support we’ve had from the community has been incredible, the lads have done so well this season, it’s been like a whirlwind.
“The lads were excellent against Wells, really good.”
And they will be back in action on Saturday because they take on Old Cryptians in the final of the North Gloucestershire Combination’s Martin Slatter Junior Cup, a game that will take place at Widden Old Boys.
Cheltenham Saracens are also through to an RFU Community Cup final after winning 48-40 at Kings Norton in the semi-final of the Counties 3 Central Plate.
They will now meet Sittingbourne, who were 41-28 winners at home to Old Grammarians, in the final at Coventry on Sunday (4pm).
Meanwhile, Hucclecote Ladies won the North Gloucestershire Combination’s invitational game against Minchinhampton Women 53-7, a game that was played at Hucclecote ahead of the RFU Community Cup semi-final.
Jo Harris, a centre, scored two of their tries, while full-back Abi Potter got three.
Selected other RFU Community Cup semi-final result – Counties 2 South Plate, Perranporth 40 Tewkesbury 24.
