The All Golds cruised into the semi-finals of the Harry Jepson Trophy with a handsome 90-6 thumping of South West League champions Saltash Essayons.

They ran in 16 tries at Torpoint with Aedan Coleman crossing for a hat-trick and Pat Crummay, Callum Merrett and Josh Stafford Smith each scoring twice.

There were also tries for Jack Uren, Josh Llewelyn, Sean Roberts, Ash Lewis, Mitch Dent, Tom Gaffney and Ryan Tanner while Merrett booted seven goals, Lewis four and Coleman and Stafford Smith one each.

Making light of the long journey west, from the moment Dent smashed through the defence to the posts in the All Golds’ first possession, they were in control of the game.

The Essayons kept going and didn’t let their heads drop despite the mounting scoreline but their best moments came in the first half as, too often, they let promising positions slip by making unforced errors.

The All Golds were clinical on the other hand and were three converted tries to the good after just six minutes with Merrett scoring a typical breakaway try immediately after Dent’s opening score and then Lewis rampaging over straight from the back of a scrum.

The All Golds’ discipline was generally good but the Essayons collected their only try of the game after receiving back-to-back penalties and Ben Morris did well to gather a kick to the corner and touch down. Ryan Cruickshanks adding the goal.

If there was any thought of the home side getting back into the game at that point, it was quickly snuffed out as the All Golds turned up the heat and the Essayons had no answer to the power of the All Golds’ forwards.

When Crummay crashed over after 20 minutes, the All Golds seized control of the match and were rarely troubled from then on.

Coleman simply ran round the defence to score from a scrum move before Gaffney scored with his first touch after coming off the bench thanks to a strong break from Brandon Lamb.

Stafford Smith added the All Golds’ seventh try of the half just before the interval, Merrett banging over his fifth goal to put them almost out of sight at 38-6.

Playing down the slope in the second period, the All Golds rolled forward with their pack to the fore, making big metres with every carry. Roberts scored neatly from Jack Uren’s offload six minutes into the half before Uren scored himself stepping round tackler after tackler until he reached the line.

With Merrett off the field with a knock, Lewis added both goals but the scrum-half returned to snatch an interception and run 80 metres to the posts chased all the way by the Essayons’ Danny Snook.

On the hour mark, Coleman scored his second from a superbly worked move deep in Essayons territory before completing his hat-trick eight minutes later, bursting through the defence for a superb long-range score, adding the goal himself for good measure.

Between those scores, the Essayons had their best chance of the half when Snook intercepted a loose pass and set off upfield, however, he was overhauled by a combination of Gaffney and Coleman and the chance was lost

After Coleman’s third try, Crummay and Lewis rampaged down the field from the restart and Tanner finished the job from 30 metres out as the Essayons finally began to wilt.

Three more scores in the last seven minutes simply put the gloss on a professional performance from the All Golds.

Crummay ignored a three-man overlap to crash over before Llewelyn stepped his way into space and raced away to score.

Stafford Smith concluded things with the All Golds’ final score, again showing too much strength and speed for the defence. He added the extras himself to seal the All Golds’ passage into the semi-final.
