Skipper Charlie Renfrew leads from the front as Gloucester City beat leaders Swansea in five-goal thriller in West Hockey Division 1 North

Captain Charlie Renfrew was the hero as Gloucester City inflicted only a second defeat of the season on table-topping Swansea on Saturday.
The 3-2 win lifted them up to fourth in the 12-team West Hockey Division 1 North and means they will go into their next game at home to Team Bath Buccaneers 3rds, in four days' time, in very good spirits.
“It was our best performance of the season,” said team manager Puv Samra.
The home team made the perfect start with Peter Rayward putting them ahead after just two minutes.
Swansea came roaring back and were ahead by the 20th minute through Ewan Lloyd and Jack Hawksworth, but the visitors were pegged back when Tom Newman levelled against his former club.
That set the stage for Renfrew, whose goal was his sixth of the campaign.
His big moment came in the 55th minute and Samra said: “He came up clutch in the big moment and kept his composure to lift it over the keeper.”
Renfrew wasn’t voted man-of-the-match though, with the award going to debutant forward Charlie Hunte.
“It was closely fought between him and forward Leo Tilley,” Samra continued. “His performance was outstanding for someone who is 17.”
The win took the number of goals Gloucester have scored in the league this season to 37 – the highest in the division – and their 11 games have seen 61 scored.Copyright © 2026 The Local Answer Limited.
