Lilley Brook ace Martin Ferne enjoys county title success
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 6th November 2018, 09:00
Martin Ferne was just about to tee-off when The Local Answer called.
He was playing at Lilley Brook – the club he has been a member of for the past four years and where he recently won a county title.
Martin is now Gloucestershire seniors stableford champion having seen off 35 rivals from some 20 different clubs.
“Yes, it’s my biggest achievement in golf so far,” said the 57-year-old. “It made it special that I won it at Lilley Brook.
“I had home advantage and that helped, I knew the course and the layout.”
That may be true but you’ve still got to perform and Martin, competing in his first county senior event, certainly did that as he scored 37 points.
“That was better than my handicap,” he said. “It was 11 and now it’s nine.”
That’s pretty decent for someone who for much of his life has been what he calls a “corporate golfer”.
“I’ve been playing golf for 30-odd years,” said Martin, who used to work in financial services. “I was a corporate golfer, I’d play where I could get a free game!”
Now retired, Martin, who lives in Cheltenham, qualified for the seniors’ county stableford final by winning a club stableford in the summer.
And Lilley Brook is a course he is very fond of.
“I play three or four times a week,” he said, “it’s my favourite course.”
And he’s going to keep on playing for as long as he can.
“Yes, I enjoy it,” he continued. “I like the fresh air, the exercise and the good company.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
