The Big Dip has raised more than £17,000 The Big Dip has raised more than £17,000

They swam, they smiled and in some cases they made a bit of a splash, but in all cases they were supporting a very worthy cause.

More than 220 people took part in The Big Dip at Sandford Lido this year, helping to raise £17,800 for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice.

And those involved earned every penny because although the weather has turned milder now – albeit it is very wet – the weather was anything but mild in Cheltenham when The Big Dip took place at the end of last week.

As its name suggests, The Big Dip involves those participating taking a cold water plunge and although it wasn’t for the faint-hearted, it certainly brought the very best out in everyone.

Becky Clarke, a matron at Cheltenham College, typified the all-for-one and one-for-all spirit that made the event, which is now in its second year, such a success.

“There was a group of seven of us from Cheltenham College who took part,” she said. “We were a bit worried because the weather was very, very cold but once we were in it wasn’t as cold as we thought it was going to be.

“I think I would go as far as to say we enjoyed it! We all enjoyed the camaraderie of getting in the water and singing together and raising money for such a worthwhile cause.”

All money raised will support Sue Ryder’s palliative and bereavement support services and Becky continued: “Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice holds a special place in my heart as it does for a lot of people.

“Helping to raise money for the hospice is such a pleasure, I know how important it is.

“As a team we have raised £1,350 which is continuing to rise. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us by donating or cheering us on today.”

The swimmers could enjoy up to 45 minutes in the water and there was a real festive feel to the fundraiser because it was kick-started by Father Christmas.

Christmas music and warm refreshments for everyone simply added to the fun.

“A huge well done and thank you to everyone who took part this year,” said Tamsin Grainger, community fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice.

“Having plunged myself in 2022 I know just how brave you all are. Thanks also to Sandford Parks Lido who opened the pool especially for us again this year, as well as to our very own Father Christmas who cheered our dippers on.

“As our charity battles increasing costs to deliver care at a time the number of people needing our care is predicted to rise, everyone’s support will help us to reach more people when they really need it so no one is left to grieve or die alone.”
