Tommy Boorman and Alfie Johnson will be looking to make an impression with Gloucestershire this season
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 19th March 2026, 09:00
David Graveney has seen a lot of cricket over the years.
The now 73-year-old is a former player with Gloucestershire, Somerset and Durham, an ex-captain of both Gloucestershire and Durham and enjoyed a successful spell as England’s chairman of selectors, most notably when Michael Vaughan’s side won the Ashes in 2005.
These days he’s Gloucestershire’s president-elect, so when he talks about up-and-coming players, it’s worth paying attention.
And there are two young players at Gloucestershire who he is looking forward to seeing play this season.
Batsman Tommy Boorman, who is well known in the north of the county through his time with Dumbleton, and off-spin bowler Alfie Johnson have both been given two-year rookie contracts by the county and they will certainly be looking to take any opportunities that come their way.
Boorman, who will be 21 next month, has already played white-ball cricket for Gloucestershire, featuring in eight Metro Bank One Day Cup games last season with a top score of 33 not out.
He also played in a Vitality Blast game at Cheltenham and Graveney said: “I thought he did well when he got his chance last season.”
Meanwhile, Johnson, who is still a teenager, has played a number of games for Gloucestershire’s 2nd XI.
He spent the winter playing in Perth, and Graveney, a former left-arm spinner, said: “I’ve been impressed with him, he spins the ball. I expect him to do well.”
