Bishop’s Cleeve boss Paul Collicutt was still buzzing 24 hours after his side’s late, late super show at Malvern Town on Tuesday evening.

Jay Malshanskyj’s 95th-minute goal gave them a 2-1 win in front of a crowd of almost 400 and maintained their fine start to the season.

They have taken 16 points from their opening six games in Southern League Division One South and are two points and one place behind leaders Winchester City having played a game fewer.

Malvern, who won 3-2 at Cleeve in last season’s play-offs and started the day on top of the table, are level on points with Cleeve but have played two games more.

“It was a brilliant result, one that we deserved with our second-half performance,” Collicutt said.

Sam Clark had given Malvern the lead from close range midway through the first half following a corner but Cleeve pulled level soon after the break, through Matt Liddiard, who fired home from just inside the penalty area.

Malshanskyj then capped a fine fightback by getting in behind the defence before coolly lobbing the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area, a goal that sparked wild celebrations.

“It was a good goal, he’s a good lad,” said Collicutt. “Malvern are a very strong side, very physical. You have to try to match them.

“We played 4-1-3-2 in the first half but in the second half we went back to what we know and played 4-3-3. Over the 90 minutes we deserved the points.

“It was very special, everybody was excited when we scored the winning goal, there must have been about 100 Cleeve fans there.”

Cleeve’s next league game is at Bashley a week on Saturday. Before that they host Sholing, who play a division above them in Premier Division South of the Southern League, in an eagerly anticipated FA Trophy third qualifying round tie.

“Sholing are fourth in their division, they’ll be a good side,” continued Collicutt. “But it’s a chance for us to show how far we’ve come as a team, if we’re up for it we can beat anyone.”

The game starts at 3pm.
