Northern Senior League high-fliers Tewkesbury Town win Reg Davis Memorial Cup
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 31st October 2024, 11:30
Tewkesbury Town have enjoyed a perfect start to the new Northern Senior League season.
The Division One pace-setters won the Reg Davis Memorial Cup with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Tredworth Tigers at Stonehouse Town last night, and on Saturday they travel to Lydney Town Reserves hoping to make it a perfect 10 in the league.
They’ve won their opening nine league games and will go into the game as strong favourites against a side who are propping up the rest of the division.
The goals have been flowing for Tewkesbury all season and they continued to flow last night with Alex Roder (two) and Nathan Newland-Gallaway on target in the win over Tredworth in a game which saw them battle back from 2-0 down and also play more than 70 minutes with 10 men after a red card for Nick Hill.
“It’s been a pretty good start to the season,” said vice-chairman Stuart Bailey with some understatement.
“We’ve brought in some new faces and really turned it around.”
Tewkesbury finished seventh in the 16-strong division last season, well adrift of the leading clubs, but they enjoyed a very good pre-season and it’s all gone on from there.
“We’re very pleased,” continued Bailey. “We’ve made some great signings – Lorcan Sheehan, Jack Spark and Jamie Goodwin.”
Pulling it all together are joint-managers Harrison Ward and Neil Franklin, alongside coach James Coates, with Ward joining the club in the summer and Coates arriving just after the start of the season.
They have favoured a 3-5-2 formation this season and the players have thrived.
Centre-forward Goodwin, who joined the club from Cheltenham Saracens, has got 12 goals in the league, the same number as Roder, who plays in the 10 role.
“They work really well together, they’ve really clicked,” added Bailey. “They are both proving to be a handful and racking up the goal contributions.”
And it’s not just those two who have been getting the goals because Tewkesbury, whose summer signings also include Courtney Hamilton and Tyler Hill, have scored 41 in the league so far, while at the other end they have been equally impressive, conceding just seven.
“The back three – Nick Hill, Jack Spark and Tony Hosking – have been brilliant,” continued Bailey.
And now that they’ve won the Reg Davis Cup, Tewkesbury want more.
“The goal is to win the league,” said Bailey. “We know it won’t be easy and there is a long way to go, Whaddon and Dursley will push us all the way.
“We want to get into the County League, but even if we win the league we’ll still have the play-offs before we can win promotion.”
And while the club’s flagship team are understandably receiving all the plaudits, they are not the only successful team at Tewkesbury.
“The reserves, development and Sunday teams are all off to good starts to the season as well,” said Bailey. “They are currently second, fourth and first respectively, so there is great buzz around the whole club.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
