Chalford won Division One of the Northern Senior League on the first Saturday of this month, they played their 28th and final game of the league campaign at the weekend but still have at least one more fixture to fulfill in 2022/23.

They clinched the title with a 2-0 win at main rivals Brockworth Albion nine days ago, but now their focus is very much on the play-offs with three teams – Chalford, Avonmouth and Hanham Athletic – competing for two places in the Gloucestershire County League next season.

Avonmouth, winners of the Bristol and Suburban League, and Bristol Premier Combination League champions Hanham play on Wednesday, with Chalford facing the losers on Saturday. If Avonmouth and Hanham are level after 90 minutes, a penalty shootout will determine the winners.

If Chalford win their game against the first-game losers, which takes place at the GFA headquarters at Almondsbury (2.30pm), they and Wednesday’s winners will be in the County League next season.

And that would certainly be something very special for the club’s chairman Martin Smith.

“It would mean everything,” said the 45-year-old. “Not just for the club but for the whole community.

“We’re like a family, when we won the title last week I’ve not seen scenes like that before in local football.

“I’m very, very proud to be chairman of this club.”

Chalford have been there or thereabouts at the top of the Northern Senior League for a number of seasons now and finished second in 2021/22.

If they do make it into the County League it will be the first time they will have played at that level in their history and Smith, who is in his first year as chairman, said: “We’ve had an absolutely fantastic season, the management team have been phenomenal.”

So how does Smith, who is also chairman of the club’s youth set-up, think Chalford will fare if they do reach the County League?

“It would be a step up but with the boys we’ve got we’re certainly capable of competing,” he said.

Should Chalford lose a week tomorrow, they will pay a second play-off game on Wednesday 24th May, also at Almondsbury (7.30pm).
