New boys Twigworth Green make impressive start in Stroud Football League
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 13th November 2025, 09:00
Stroud League new boys Twigworth Green enjoyed a goal bonanza in what was only their eighth game in Division 5N.
The club were formed at the start of the season and they have hit the ground running because they are top of the table, still unbeaten and defeated Painswick 4ths 19-0 at the weekend.
“It was a pretty good win,” said club secretary Jonny Roberts. “They were quite a young side, it was our first clean sheet.”
It was also their first home win of the season after draws against Rising Stars Reserves and Mavericks Reserves – they play their home games at Oxstalls – but they have been prolific on the road having collected 13 points from their five games.
They hit nine at Longford Reserves and seven at Hunts Grove and have now scored 43 in their eight games.
Callum Harcombe got four against Painswick while David Bishop and Zak Long completed hat-tricks.
Joe Ingram, Kieran Renouf-Preece and Morgan Williams all grabbed two and there was one apiece for Joseph Conway, Brodie Goddard-Jones and Roberts.
Roberts, who is 24, scored with a penalty and he and Goddard-Jones are two of the driving forces behind the club.
“We’ve got about 30 players signed on,” Roberts said. “The aim is to win promotion this season and hopefully set up a reserves team next season.”
The team are managed by Ben Johns and Saturday’s win took them to the top of the nine-team division, a point ahead of Upton St Leonards Reserves and Rising Star Reserves.
They are three points ahead of fourth-placed Barnwood United 3rds, who they host on Saturday.
Barnwood have played the same number of games as Twigworth, while Upton St Leonards have played nine and Rising Stars seven.
“It’s a very tight division, there’s still a long way to go,” continued Roberts. “We drew 2-2 at Barnwood at the start of the season when we scored an 80th-minute equaliser.”Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
