Fintan chasing a Cheltenham League and GFA Junior Cup North double
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 22nd April 2025, 11:30
Fintan are halfway to clinching an impressive double after winning the Cheltenham Football League.
They won the Premier Division title with a 1-1 draw at Cheltenham United on Saturday and are hoping to add the GFA Junior Cup North when they take on Abbeymead Rovers at Bishop’s Cleeve.
And they will go into tonight’s final in buoyant mood after getting over the line at the weekend.
They had lost their previous league game 2-1 at nearest rivals Whaddon United Reserves and they didn’t make it easy for themselves at the weekend against a side who will play in the Senior Charities Cup final next week.
“It was stressful but we got the job done,” said manager Craig Hopkins. “It was the story of the past month, we hit the woodwork three times in the first half.
“We went ahead in the second half but then we gave away a penalty five minutes later but we managed to hold on.”
Fintan’s goal was scored by Thomas Short and Hopkins continued: “It was the first chance he had, he ran onto a through ball and slotted it home from a tight angle.
“He’s a confident lad, he plays the game in a simple way, he rarely gives the ball away.”
Fintan finished ahead of Whaddon on goal difference and are automatically eligible to play in the Northern Senior League next season.
There were only seven teams in the Cheltenham League’s Premier Division but Hopkins insisted: “Winning the league title is still a title.”
The 29-year-old won’t be with Fintan next season because he is joining Smiths Barometrics for the 2025/26 campaign, a club who have just been relegated from Division One of the Northern Senior League.
He's relatively new to management because he is in his first full season in charge of Fintan after taking over midway through last season, but although he is moving on he is desperate to sign off with a win tonight.
“The County Cup is the hardest to win,” Hopkins said. “It’s going to be tough but we’ve beaten three sides in the division above Abbeymead this season.”
Abbeymead have won Division Two of the Stroud League after winning 18 and drawing two of their 21 games so far but Hopkins will be hoping that his key players perform at Kayte Lane.
Sam Green has scored more than 20 goals this season and Hopkins said: “Greener is a very good player.”
The striker has had plenty of opportunity in the second half of this season because of an injury to Daniel Wills.
Wills, who scored a 35-yarder in a 2-1 win at Stroud League champions Wickwar Wanderers in an earlier round of the County Cup, made his first-team return for the last 15 minutes on Saturday and Hopkins confirmed that he will be on the bench tonight.
