Abbeymead Rovers turn on the style to win the GFA Junior Cup North
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Wednesday, 23rd April 2025, 09:00
Four second-half goals earned Abbeymead Rovers back-to-back County Cups at Bishop’s Cleeve last night.
The Stroud League Division Two champions overpowered Fintan, from the Cheltenham League, to win the GFA Junior Cup North, 12 months after they’d lifted the GFA Intermediate Cup North.
“It was a really comprehensive performance by the boys,” said club secretary Daniel Golton of the 4-0 win. “In the first half both teams were feeling each other out, but then manager Gary Mabbett made a couple of changes.
"Pushing Jaxon Hylton out to the right really stretched Fintan’s defence.”
Fintan went into the game full of confidence after winning the Cheltenham League Premier Division title at the weekend but they were always facing an uphill battle once Abbeymead went ahead soon after the break.
That goal was scored by the influential Tim Ranken and Abbeymead doubled their lead with a Xander Jones free-kick.
“He’s a brilliant player, he’s our star boy,” Golton said of Jones. “He probably could play at a higher level but he’s stayed with us. He loves Gary, as all the players do, and his brothers play for us too.”
Leading goalscorer Montell Smith added goal number three before Jones grabbed his second, with both being assisted by Ranken.
Abbeymead beat Cheltenham League side Montpellier 2-0 in last year’s GFA Intermediate Cup North final, a game that was also played at Bishop’s Cleeve, and Golton added: “I think we play really, really nice football, we can pass the ball.”Other Images
