Manchester United players from yesteryear turned back the clock on a special day for Bishop’s Cleeve Football Club.

A team including the likes of David May, Lee Martin and Danny Simpson helped Manchester United Legends beat Bishop’s Cleeve Legends 3-1 in front of a crowd of more than 1,100 at Kayte Lane on Saturday.

Two goals by Danny Webber, who played in the Premier League for both Sheffield United and Portsmouth, and one by Luke Chadwick, who played 16 games in Manchester United’s Premier League title success in 2000/01, earned them the victory.

The game marked the start of Bishop's Cleeve's 120th anniversary celebrations and it was James Verseci who got the home side’s goal to bring the score back to 2-1 in the second half.

“It was a very, very special day,” said Paul Collicutt, a lifelong Manchester United fan who managed Bishop’s Cleeve Legends.

“It was a game we should have won. Slacky [Kevin Slack] missed three or four chances, James Verseci missed three or four chances, Ashley Williams had two one-on-ones.

“Don’t get me wrong, they had chances too, it was a very entertaining game, especially in the second half.

“Their players can still play. The two Dannys – Webber and Simpson – looked very good and David May made it look so easy even though he’s quite a big lad now.”

Verseci slotted his goal into the bottom left-hand corner from 12-15 yards and Collicutt continued: “He came back from holiday 24 hours early so he could play in the game.

“Jerry Packham flew down from Scotland, he played for five or 10 minutes, and Lloyd Tucker also played for five or 10 minutes.

“He’d flown in from America to see his brother Andy, he didn’t even know the game was happening until he got here.”

The fun had begun on Friday evening when half-a-dozen of the Manchester United Legends held a Q&A at Kayte Lane.

“Russell Beardsmore is a real character,” added Collicutt. “The biggest compliment I can pay them is that there were no Big Time Charlies.

“They were all down to earth and mixed in. They conducted themselves very well, everyone enjoyed it.”

Bishop’s Cleeve are hoping for another big crowd on Friday 4th July when they host Cheltenham Town in a pre-season friendly (7pm).
