Dursley Town and Whaddon United face-off in the Northern Senior League’s eagerly-anticipated Reg Davis Cup final tomorrow (7.30pm).

The game between two of the league’s strongest teams takes place at Longlevens and both go into the showpiece clash on the back of impressive wins.

Dursley opened up a four-point lead at the top of Division One with a 1-0 win at home to nearest rivals English Bicknor on Saturday, while Whaddon enjoyed a thumping 7-0 at Brockworth Albion, a result that manager Eliott Sheerin said was their “best of the season”.

It lifted them up to third in the table, five points behind Dursley, who have won six out of seven league games under new boss Ben Deakin.

Deakin, who is 31, was assistant to Karl Nash last season and has played in all but two of the club’s league and cup games this season.

The one-time Brimscombe and Thrupp star – he played some 500 games for the club – is likely to be on the bench tomorrow and he’s hoping his side can put on a show at Saw Mills.

“We’ve made a great start,” he said. “The aim at the beginning of the season was to compete in the league and win the Reg Davis trophy, it would be great to win some silverware in the first two or three months of the season.”

Whaddon are thinking exactly the same, of course. They’ve won four and drawn one of their seven league games and Sheerin is hoping tomorrow’s cup final can be a springboard for the rest of the season.

Whaddon won 26 of their 30 league games last season when finishing second to Tewkesbury Town and Sheerin admitted: “We haven’t quite been at our best so far this season.

“We’ve been a bit unlucky in a couple of games but we haven’t been taking all our chances. That performance against Brockworth was our best of the season, I think we’ve got a stronger squad than last season.

“I think if we can win the cup that would give us momentum and we could go on another run in the league like we had last season.”

This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season – Dursley finished one place and 32 points behind Whaddon last season – and Deakin knows his side face a tough test tomorrow.

“They are a really tough team to play against,” he said. “They’ve got threats all over the pitch, when they win they score a lot of goals.”
