Cheltenham Town boss Gary Johnson is looking forward to first pre-season friendly

Gary Johnson has had a pretty good few days.
He was at the Cheltenham Cricket Festival last week where he saw 25 wickets fall on the first day and was on Centre Court at Wimbledon 48 hours later to see Johanna Konta, Andy Murray and Rafa Nadal serve up a super show.
And before Cheltenham Town fans start wondering how things are going closer to home he’s got that under control as well.
“The players have been working very hard and they’re really looking forward to the first pre-season game at Oxford City on Tuesday,” he said.
The players reported back after their summer break on 28th June and the countdown to the club’s opening League Two game of the season at Morecambe on Saturday 5th August has very much started.
The Oxford game is the first of seven friendlies – although there will be a little bit more riding on the game against Bristol City, who are managed by Gary Johnson’s son Lee, on Tuesday 25th July.
“We play for the Johnson Cup,” said Gray. “He won it last year so I’ve got to get it back!”.
The Johnsons were at Wimbledon together on Wednesday – it was the first time Gary had been on Centre Court – and although they were lucky enough to see three of the world’s best players close up and personal, that was not their overriding memory of the day.
“We weren’t watching the players,” Gary told The Local Answer. “Lee and I watched the ball boys and the line judges.
“We were fascinated by how professional they were, they just stuck to their plans.”
Both Johnsons will be hoping their plans come to fruition this season.
Cheltenham Town pre-season friendlies: Tues 11th July, v Oxford C (a 7.45pm); Fri 14th July, v Bishop’s Cleeve (a, 7.30pm); Mon 17th July, v Evesham Utd (a, 7.45pm); Thurs 20th July, v Bath City (a, 7.30pm); Sat 22nd July, v Weston-super-Mare (a, 3pm); Tues 25th July, v Bristol City (h, 7.45pm); Sat 29th July, v Peterborough United (h, 3pm).Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
