Painswick have their eyes on a showpiece cup final at Lord’s.

The go-ahead club head to Truro this weekend for a quarter-final clash with Grampound Road in the Voneus Village Cup, having booked their place in the last eight with a hugely impressive six-wicket win at Goatacre.

“It’s the furthest we’ve ever got in the competition,” said team organiser Dom Barnard. “We’ve been entering the competition for the last 20 years or so.

“It’s very exciting, we’re having a really good season, we’re really pleased.”

And Painswick, who are enjoying their Cricket Week this week, are certainly having a fine season.

They are third in the 10-strong Premier 2 Glos/Wilts division in the West of England Premier League ahead of the likes of Dumbleton, Cheltenham and Hatherley and Reddings and just a couple of points behind second-placed Goatacre.

They host Cheltenham in a league game on Saturday, after which a number of their players will head to Cornwall in preparation for Sunday’s game.

“It’s just over a three-hour trip, most of the team are going down the night before,” said Barnard.

And they will certainly be in confident mood after their dismantling of Goatacre in the previous round when the Wiltshire side were dismissed for 139.

Fast-medium swing bowler Matt Connolly led the charge with 3-20 while his new-ball partner and brother Jon, who bowls at a good pace, took 2-35.

Their younger brother Alastair also chipped in with a wicket and then made 35 in their successful run chase and Barnard said of them: “They’re really good players and they all play every week.

“Alastair joined the club about six years ago, Matthew joined a year later and Jonathan joined about three years ago. It’s special to have three brothers in the same side.”

Meanwhile, Aston Ingham will entertain Dumbleton in an all-Gloucestershire tie on Sunday for a place in the last four.

Aston Ingham, who lead Division One of the Gloucestershire County League, qualified for the national rounds as champions of the Herefordshire & Powys group, while Dumbleton - the 2022 champions - won the Worcestershire group.

The semi-finals are scheduled for Sunday 4th August and the final is set to take place on Sunday 15th September.

Quarter-final draw: Aston Ingham v Dumbleton; Frickley Colliery v Woodhouses; Grampound Road v Painswick; Woolpit v Foxton Granta.
