Youngsters to be centre stage for primary school kwik cricket finals’ day at Cheltenham College
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 20th June 2017, 14:10, Tags: Match Reports
Around 200 children will grace the famous Cheltenham College ground on Friday as part of the 2017 Gloucestershire year 5 and 6 primary school kwik cricket finals’ day.
The home of the world’s longest running cricket festival will be transformed into a hive of junior cricketing activity as 21 teams from 19 schools compete across a mixed and girls’ only tournament.
Fourteen teams, including last year’s champions and serial winners Christchurch Downend, will take part in the mixed or ‘open’ event after winning their respective district festivals, held at cricket grounds across the county.
In the girls’ event, seven teams have reached finals’ day after qualifying from their local events. Last year’s runners-up Cam Everlands will be hoping to go one better in the absence of any of the other semi-finalists from last year.
Bishop’s Cleeve Primary Academy and St Helen’s from Alveston in south Gloucestershire are the only schools to have sides through to finals day in both the open and girls’ competitions.
In previous years Gloucestershire’s professional players including captain Gareth Roderick and Matt Taylor have attended and a number of their team-mates are set to be there again on Friday.
The five and six final’s day is the biggest event in the Gloucestershire Cricket Board’s (GCB) education programme.
As well as running indoor and outdoor cricket festivals the Board currently provides coaching sessions in nearly 200 schools across both primary and secondary schools through its Education Offer and through funding from the Chance to Shine cricket charity.
GCB projects and programmes manager Chris Munden – who organises the Gloucestershire schools programme - said: “We believe that giving children the chance to play cricket competitively is one of the key factors in helping to spark a lifelong love of the game in them which is why these events are so important.
“More than 1,500 kids have taken part in the district rounds of the year 5 and 6 kwik cricket competition culminating in the 21 teams competing on Friday.
“Kwik cricket finals’ day is always a highlight of the year. Seeing so many children with smiles on their faces, playing on the famous College Ground is a wonderful sight.”
One of the biggest local festivals took place at Hatherley and Reddings CC, with 12 teams taking part on June 14.
Warden Hill were the victors and will appear at finals’ day after a convincing win over Grangefield’s B team in the final.
The eventual winners had already beaten Grangefield’s A team in the semi-finals having reached the last four courtesy of a last ball success over Charlton Kings Juniors in the group stages.
The semi-final line-up was completed by Brockworth who missed out on the final by the smallest of margins in a highly competitive clash.
